About us
Medical & Pharma Financial Services is a trading name of CML Financial Limited. We advise doctors and pharmacists on their finances, and have been doing so since we were founded in 2007.
Our story
CML Financial grew out of J.G. Carlin & Co., a long-established accountancy and tax practice in Buncrana, Co. Donegal. It means we think in terms of tax as well as financial services, and how money actually works for professionals who earn it in complex ways.
We set up the firm because we saw that doctors and pharmacists were getting generic financial advice that did not fit their reality. The mix of public and private income, HSE pension entitlements, practice ownership structures, and sector-specific tax reliefs requires specialist knowledge. A generalist adviser, however competent, is not going to know the detail of GMS superannuation or the interaction between the Single Scheme and private pension funding.
In 2010, we opened our Sligo office to serve clients across the West and North West. Today we advise doctors and pharmacists nationwide.
Our team
The firm is led by three directors. John Carlin FCCA CTA QFA is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a Chartered Tax Adviser, and a Qualified Financial Adviser, with a particular emphasis on retirement planning and tax strategy for medical professionals. James O'Donnell BA FCA QFA is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland who combines deep accountancy expertise with qualified financial advisory credentials. Joseph G. Carlin FCCA Dip Insolvency QFA has been in practice since 1981, bringing extensive experience in business structuring and succession planning.
All three hold the Qualified Financial Adviser (QFA) designation, the professional qualification required of financial advisers in Ireland.
Regulation and authorisation
CML Financial Limited (CBI Registration No. C46840, Company Registration No. 437266) is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland as:
- An Insurance Intermediary under the EU (Insurance Distribution) Regulations 2018
- An Investment Intermediary under the Investment Intermediaries Act 1995
- A Mortgage Intermediary under the Consumer Credit Act 1995
- A Mortgage Credit Intermediary under the EU (Consumer Mortgage Credit Agreements) Regulations 2016
We are subject to the Consumer Protection Code, the Minimum Competency Code, and Fitness & Probity Standards as set out by the Central Bank of Ireland.
CML Financial Limited is a member of Brokers Ireland, the representative body for insurance brokers and financial advisers in Ireland.
Why specialist advice matters
A GP juggling GMS income, private practice earnings, and a HSE pension needs different advice from a salaried employee with one occupational scheme. A pharmacist planning to sell their business faces tax questions that have nothing in common with a standard retirement. A hospital consultant navigating the common fund, public service pension integration, and private income needs an adviser who understands each moving part.
We work exclusively in this space. Getting it right requires familiarity with the contracts, pension schemes, and Revenue rules specific to the medical and pharmaceutical professions in Ireland, not just general financial knowledge.
